Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman and Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif discussed on Thursday the Yemen situation and matters of mutual interest, said a Pakistani diplomat.
The Pakistan delegation included Army Chief Gen. Raheel Sharif, Defense Minister Khawaja Asif, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi and Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry.
A lunch was hosted in honor of the visiting Pakistani premier. Among those who attended were Crown Prince Muqrin, Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal and Riyadh Gov. Prince Faisal bin Bandar.
Sharif had been met at Riyadh Air Base by Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Naif, Defense Minister Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Pakistani Ambassador Manzoor ul Haq.
Meanwhile, President Hadi received Sharif and Defense Minister Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh and discussed prospects of coordination between Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Yemen to reinforce peace and stability in the region.
The Pakistani ambassador was not available for comment. However, in a press briefing in Islamabad, Tasnim Aslam, Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson, said: “Sharif has gone to Saudi Arabia to have consultations with the Saudi leadership to find an amicable solution to the issue.”
The Foreign Office also issued a statement saying that the coalition forces’ move to end their airstrikes would pave the way for a political settlement. This was echoed by the Defense Ministry, with Asif welcoming the end of the airstrikes, and the start of Operation Restoring Hope.
“The main focus was for solidarity with Saudi Arabia” in line with earlier commitments from Islamabad to defend the Kingdom’s territorial integrity, a Pakistani official told AFP.
